THE DISAPPOINTMENT for a host of youngsters who missed out on being selected in the NAB AFL Draft could quickly be forgotten with the NAB AFL Pre-Season and NAB AFL Rookie Drafts to be held on Tuesday, December 11.
Although the harsh reality was that 1322 players nominated for this year's draft - an enormous number considering only 69 positions were filled last Saturday - there are still 61 vacancies remaining.
Before the third list lodgment on Friday, November 30, there are six unfilled positions on AFL senior lists and 55 rookie vacancies.
At this stage Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, Melbourne, Richmond and the Western Bulldogs have one spot remaining on their senior list, although West Coast is set to have a position opened up when it delists Ben Cousins.
West Coast has already stated publicly that it will delist the former skipper when the third list lodgment is submitted. The reason the club did not delist him before the NAB AFL Draft was due to the fact it could have impacted on West Coast's final Total Player Payments.
The Pre-Season Draft is likely to be a blend of ex-AFL listed players and untried youngsters. Former Crow forward Scott Welsh is the most likely to reignite his AFL career through this draft, with Ashley Sampi and Guy Richards also in the mix.
In terms of rookie vacancies, all clubs have positions which need to be filled.
Sydney has the most number of positions to be filled, with five vacancies. Collingwood has the fewest, with just one spot up for grabs.
Ashley Arrowsmith (Calder Cannons), Tom Bellchambers (Tassie Mariners), David Gourdis (Subiaco), Jackson Hall (Gippsland Power), Aaron Joseph (Tassie Mariners), Chris Kangars (Geelong Falcons), Haelen Kay (Gippsland Power), Patrick McGinnity (Claremont), Jared Petrenko (Eagles SA) and Hugh Sandilands (Oakleigh Chargers) are just a handful of names to watch out for in Rookie Draft.
Others such as former Fremantle speedster Clayton Collard, Todd Grima (formerly of Geelong) and Darren Pfeiffer (ex-Adelaide) will also be hoping for second chances.
