Swans axe Fixter, Sundqvist

Matt Burgan 12:00 AM Fri 28 Oct, 2005
Sydney's 2006 list is already taking on quite a different look to its premiership winning squad of 2005, as the club has made further changes in the lead-up to Monday's first list lodgment. The Swans have delisted Ben Fixter and Jarrad Sundqvist, while they have elevated rookies Heath Grundy, Earl Shaw and Luke Vogels. Sydney had five players retire at the end of the season - Stuart Maxfield, Jason Ball, Heath James, Matthew Nicks and Andrew Schauble, while the Swans traded Jason Saddington to Carlton and Mark Powell to the Kangaroos. Sydney general manager of football Andrew Ireland said injuries had curtailed Fixter and Sundqvist's career. "Both Ben and Jarrad have worked tremendously hard in their time at the Swans and it has been unfortunate that injuries have restricted their appearances," Ireland said. "There is no doubt they both still have plenty of good football ahead of them and there is certainly sadness to see them go as they are both outstanding young men. "We wish them well in their future endeavours and the door always remains open to them here at the Swans." Fixter is reportedly set to begin pre-season training with the Brisbane Lions. The 24-year-old, played 27 matches with the Swans, after making his debut in 2000, while 22-year-old Sundqvist made nine appearances after starting in 2002. Sydney now has a senior list of 35 players heading into the NAB AFL Draft.
