The star key forward had a 2008 season to forget as he twice was suspended, for a total of eight matches, and broke a wrist. Regardless, he topped the Swans’ goalkicking (41) for a seventh consecutive season to equal the club record of Len Mortimer (1906-12). He also led the club for contested marks (47). The 2005 premiership co-captain will be hoping for less controversy and more games and goals in 2009.

Player honours: best and fairest 2004; 2nd best and fairest 2005; All-Australian 2004, 2005, 2006; International Rules Series 2003, 2006 (co-captain); Sydney leading goalkicker 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008; co-captain 2005-07; premiership side 2005.

Brownlow Medal: 2008 votes 4; career votes 83.

Previous AFL club: St Kilda (1995-2001: 88 games, 144 goals).

Draft history: 1995 National AFL Draft 1st round selection (St Kilda) No. 19 overall traded by Carlton for Craig Devonport; 2001 National AFL Draft traded by St Kilda for No. 13 (Nick Dal Santo), No. 17 (James Kelly) and No. 45 (Nathan Clarke).
