Opposition teams hoping Goodes might show signs of slowing down in 2011 were sorely disappointed. At 31, he was at his scintillating best, winning his third best and fairest. His final third of the season was remarkable, starting with a career-best 34-disposal effort against the Bulldogs in round 18. Played every game to end the season on 300 career matches, only the second Swan to do so. Barring injury, the durable Goodes will cruise past Michael O’Loughlin’s record of 303 club games early in the season. The co-captain led the Swans in marks (143), goals (41) and kicks (320) and was third for possessions (511). Playing through the midfield and in the forward line, he remains at the peak of his powers. Coaches' call:
2011 was… another really good year. He showed that he can play well in the forward line or midfield and he probably did both those roles really well at different times. He’s still got that real versatility which is just such a great value to the team. He is a pretty consistent performer week in week out.
His pre-season has been… good as well. For a guy his age, he basically did every session. He was another one who did a really solid pre-season and hardly missed a beat.
In 2012 we want to see… basically the same as the last couple of years. You don’t want to set too many limits on him because he keeps getting better year by year. We don’t really set any expectations on him we just get him ready to go and make sure he’s clear on his role and when he goes out he performs it.
