Ladies of the Lake

2009 marked a new era for the Sydney Swans (South Melbourne) Football Club, with the beginning of a new membership group called 'Ladies of the Lake' (LOL).

LOL are passionate, spirited women, sharing a connection through football and are proud to celebrate the Swans club heritage and history.

LOL members can share their passion for AFL, and their dedication and pride for a wonderful club and its superb players and coaches that make us all proudly Swans supporters.

In the past years LOL have come together as a group for many events and functions including a Mother’s Day Brunch, High Tea at the Botanical gardens, Flagstaff Gardens and the Park Hyatt. We have had outings to the ACMI Exhibition of Hollywood Costumes, Cyclone Gallery South Melbourne Swans exhibition and regularly meet at “The Riser” (aka Rising Sun Hotel) in South Melbourne, a Sydney Swans friendly venue, to watch interstate games together. One highlight for many (besides the 2012 Grand Final joy) – was joining with L@SS the Sydney equivalent to LOL,  and walking onto the SCG to form a guard of honour prior to the Swans v’s St Kilda match to celebrate AFL’s Women’s Round. It was a unique and proud experience for those that were able to join in.

You see that’s the beauty of being a member of LOL; you’ll be closely connected to the Club and will have the opportunity to attend frequent events with like-minded, passionate Swans women.

In 2012, LOL decided to recognise their long-term members by elevating these ladies to LOL ‘Legend’ status and presenting them with a red pashmina scarf.

“The Ladies group down here have a lot of older lady members who remember the Swans when they played at the Lakeside Oval so they have a special memory and a special part in our heritage so we wanted to honour them,” said LOL member & 2012 No. 1 Ticket Holder, Philippa Power.

In 2014 LOL also recognised four ladies who understand more than most of us what it takes to play footy, these special ladies are players’ wives andwere awarded LOL Legend Status and included Irene Goonan, Val Heriot, June Lambert, Karen Morwood.

If you are interested to learn more about LOL and become a member there is a small fee of $35 which goes towards discounted events and functions, The Swans Foundation and LOL sponsorship of locker 29 at the club.
