Injured Sydney Swans stars Kurt Tippett, Jarrad McVeigh and Gary Rohan arrived in Melbourne on Thursday ahead of the club's Friday night preliminary final against Geelong.

Reinforcements were at the ready though, with Zak Jones, Harry Cunningham and James Rose all making the trip down despite not playing in last week's semi-final win versus Adelaide.

Tippett suffered a hairline fracture in his jaw in the opening week of finals, while a minor calf strain to McVeigh's left calf has him in doubt.

Rohan's season appeared over against the Crows when he was stretchered off after hurting his right knee, but the diagnosis of bone bruising means he remains some chance to face the Cats.

A closed training session at the MCG on Thursday will be important in determining whether the trio plays, although defender Nick Smith said a late call would likely be made.

"We'll have a session now and see how they go, and hopefully they get through," Smith said.

"With three players who are proven in finals footy, we'll give them every chance we can."

The Swans will have a light session on Thursday. McVeigh appears the most likely of those under a cloud to miss. A six-day break since the Swans' last clash hasn't done the 31-year-old any favours.

Smith said it would be a major blow if the co-captain was unavailable.

"It's important that we have our leaders out there. He sees the game in a really important way and directs a lot of the young guys around him," he said.

Geelong forward Daniel Menzel is another with question marks over his fitness with an adductor issue causing him concern.

"He's a really good player. In saying that, it doesn't matter who plays for them and who plays for us. It comes down to our application on Friday night," Smith said.

The backman said Menzel was among the opponents he had prepared himself to line up on, along with "a couple of other guys".
