Lance Franklin believes he’s got enough miles in the legs this summer to ensure his interrupted pre-season won’t hamper what the star forward hopes is another big year in front of goal.

Franklin underwent a post-season operation to repair a torn anterior labrum in his shoulder, an injury which the three-time Coleman Medallist carried through the Sydney Swans’ finals series.

In what is usually a three-month recovery period, the 29-year-old was out of his sling and back running after the eight-week mark but stayed clear of training with the main group up until a fortnight ago.

He slipped back into the fold seamlessly, taking no time to acclimatise to the rigours of pre-season training again. His renowned athleticism and skill also on show shortly into his first session.

He’s still in the non-contact phase but is expected to resume full training in the coming weeks.

“I had the surgery straight after the Grand Final, and everything has gone well from there,” Franklin said.

“Although I can’t do any contact (drills), I’ve been able to run still which has been really good.

“I’m in a good position at the moment. I’m nearly back to full contact…I’m looking forward to getting out there amongst the boys.”

In the middle of his 13th pre-season, the 247-gamer said there was no cause for concern despite missing such a big chunk of the summer and, all going well, was confident he could still have an impact during the upcoming community series.

“(The operation) was just one of those things that needed to be done,” he said.

“I was pretty positive about what I needed to do over the break to ensure I was in good shape coming back.

“The next period for me is important. It’s a big month for me, just to get myself right in time for games.”

After missing the end of 2015 to seek treatment for mental health issues, Franklin returned to football in emphatic fashion, playing every game of the season while booting 81 goals for good measure.

He led the Swans for score involvements and added the Paul Kelly Players’ Player Award to his impressive list of achievements at last year’s Club Champion Dinner.

He moved to 12th on the VFL/AFL all-time goalkickers list, and needs just 13 more goals this season to reach the 800-goal mark.

Franklin says he hopes to build on his impressive 2016.

“Nothing really changes,” he added.

“I know what I need to do and how to play my best football.

“For me, it’s just about getting out there, doing the work and being consistent.”
