It is a scenario which has probably played out in Matthew Ling's head a million times over since the 2017 draftee learned of his fate during Friday night's National Draft.
Primarily a defender during his time with the Geelong Falcons, Ling seems destined though to one day step into the Sydney Swans midfield and provide the Club with some quality outside class.
Blessed with serious pace and silky skills, the 18-year-old should complement the Swans' contested kings nicely when the time comes.
"They're the best midfielders in the competition," Ling said after celebrating his first-round selection.
"To have them all in the one team is pretty handy. They're selfless players.
"It's hard to think about it now but once I get to meet them it'll become a little more real."
Surrounded by family (including twin brother, Harry) and friends in his Geelong home, Ling was stunned when the Sydney Swans called out his name with their first selection.
Touted as a second-rounder in the lead up to the draft, the left-footer couldn't believe his eyes when his name appeared alongside the Swans' pick 14.
"My mum said that I had a little sniff of going to Sydney but (I thought) 'probably not' and then to be called out was pretty amazing," he said.
"I love Sydney."
A product of reigning TAC Cup premiers Geelong Falcons, Ling has always held the Sydney Swans in high esteem especially while developing under the tutelage of coach Daniel O'Keefe.
O'Keefe, a former Swan himself, must have had a premonition and would be beaming knowing Ling will shortly be bound for the Harbour City.
"He was drafted to Sydney around 2005 or 2006, I think, and has always talked pretty highly of them," Ling said of his now former mentor.
"Just the way they play, everyone works for that common goal and all for the team."
Ling got a double dose of elation after turning to the televsion screen when the celebrations subsided to see former Falcons teammate and good mate Tom McCartin also selected by the Sydney Swans.
The duo will join fellow draftee Ryley Stoddart for training in the coming week.
