Sydney Swans defender Zak Jones will take on Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon after being cleared of any serious injury.

Jones left the field and didn’t return after coping a head knock early in the final quarter of the win over Fremantle at the SCG.

Sydney Swans Head of Football Tom Harley said Jones will be monitored throughout the week but is expected to take on the Lions.

“We just decided to take a pretty cautious approach with Zak,” Harley said.

“We are just looking after his load early in the week and he will train on Thursday and suit up against the Lions on Saturday.

“He is obviously an important player for us and he has recovered well.”

Lewis Melican is close to a return after overcoming a hamstring strain that has kept him out of the side since Round 3.

“Lewis is tracking really well, he had a setback through his rehab that put him on the sidelines for a further three weeks, so we have been extra cautious with him this time,” Harley said.

“He has trained on Tuesday and will train again on Thursday before we assess as to when and where he plays.

“We are absolutely expecting him back in the fold either this week or next.”

Fellow defender Alex Johnson is also close to a recall after overcoming a groin injury.

Johnson has continued to increase his training in recent weeks and took up the role of runner for the Swans NEAFL side in their clash with Southport last weekend.

“Alex is getting really close to a return to play, which is fantastic for him,” Harley said.

“He has done a mountain of running and has been reintroduced to skills at training.

“He is really getting close to a return, so we will assess later in the week whether it is this week – if it isn’t this week we fully expect it to be next week.”
