Sydney Swans ruckman Callum Sinclair has told of the “really good spirits” of Sam Naismith, after the big man this week logged his first run on his long road back from a season-ending knee injury.

Naismith ruptured an anterior crucial ligament in March and on Monday set off on his first run since, stepping onto an anti-gravity treadmill at the SCG as he turned an important corner.

Sinclair took on the mantle as Sydney’s primary ruckman after Naismith’s setback and the pre-season retirement of Kurt Tippett – and he was to rapt to see Naismith dust off his runners.

“It’s never easy going through something like that,” Sinclair said.

“He had a big smile on his face when he went for his run and all the boys got right around him. He’s been awesome. He’s been in really good spirits around the Club. He’s a really valued member and the boys love having him around.”

As Sydney prepares for a huge stoush with Richmond at Etihad Stadium next Thursday night, Sinclair is fine-tuning his big frame for a duel with former Swan Toby Nankervis.

The 199-centimetre big man played 12 games for the Swans before signing with the Tigers ahead of the 2017 season.

Sinclair will face his former teammate off the back of an impressive run of form.

Although the former Eagle last year predominantly played as a forward and pinch-hit in the ruck in support of Naismith and Tippett, he has thrived in his new role.

He is the highest-ranked Swan in the AFL Coaches’ Association votes and has battled hard against a host of seasoned campaigners, including Nic Naitanui, Aaron Sandilands and Sam Jacobs.

Sinclair is this season averaging 29 hit-outs per game and has kicked more goals (10) than any other go-to ruckman in the competition.

He said he was relishing the chance to carry the Swans’ rucking duties.

“I’ve enjoyed the role every single week,” Sinclair said.

“It comes with responsibility but it’s an enjoyable role. The more you’re around the footy the greater the chance you have of getting a kick.

“I like to think I’ve improved and become more of a consistent player this year.”
