As he has every year since moving to Sydney, Mattner produced another consistent season in the Swans’ backline and was a key member of the AFL’s best defensive unit.

Mattner missed just two games in five seasons with Sydney, moving past 200 career games in 2012.

Having turned 30 during the year, Mattner still relishes the tackling, spoiling and dash from defence that are his trademarks and appears to have plenty left in the tank.

On June 6, 2013, Mattner announced his immediate retirement from the AFL due to a degenerative hip condition after 222 games.

Previous AFL club: Adelaide (2002-07: 98 games, 14 goals).

Draft history: 2002 rookie elevation (Adelaide); 2007 NAB AFL Draft traded by Adelaide for No. 28 (Marlon Motlop).

2013 Coaches Call

2012 saw him again as a regular member of our back six.

Pre-season has been interrupted. He returned this year with a hip injury over the pre-season and is just resuming training. We expect him back by round one.

We hope in 2013 that he will remain an important part of the mix.
