Blessed with few injury concerns over the first 13 years of his career, Goodes’ body has let him down at times in the past two seasons.

He missed five games in 2012 with a torn quad, but still played his part in a second flag.

Last season, however, a knee injury in round 13 proved the end of his 2013 campaign.

There were still highlights, including a stunning performance in the round nine victory over Collingwood, to show the Swans’ games record-holder is still a tremendously dangerous proposition when fully fit.

Goodes missed the first five games of 2014, but returned as the substitute in the Swans round six victory over Melbourne at the MCG. In round 16 against the West Coast Eagles, he broke former Adelaide Crow Andrew McLeod's record for the most games by an Indigenous player with 341.

Draft history: 1997 National AFL Draft 3rd round selection (Sydney) No. 43 overall.

2014 Coaches Call

His 2013 season was tough because of his injuries. Before those injuries, he was in some of the best form that I’ve seen him in, particularly in the Collingwood game in Melbourne and the Essendon game here in Sydney. His game against the Pies at the MCG was just about as good a game as I’ve seen him play, so he really did get back to his best in terms of how much impact he can have. His leadership and his performances in general were of a really high standard for a good chunk in the middle of the season.

His pre-season has been a little bit slow but still he’s ahead of where he was last year, which is a big step for us given he played in round one last year.

We hope in 2014 that he has a big year and that he gets back to what he showed in 2013 for a period in the middle of the season. We also want to see him enjoy himself, because there is nothing better than seeing him bubbling around the place because it just spreads through the whole group when he’s up and about.
