Injury and a lack of form affected Bird’s start to 2013, but he quickly found his feet, playing in the club’s final 21 games of the year, including all three finals.

Able to play a variety of roles, including as a defensive forward, he averaged 18 possessions and four tackles and chipped in with 10 goals.

The highlight was his 33-disposal, five-tackle effort against Carlton in round 14 that led to two Brownlow Medal votes.

Draft history: 2007 NAB AFL Draft 4th round selection (Sydney) No. 59 overall as NSW scholarship holder.

2014 Coaches Call

His 2013 season was a really good year for Birdy and probably his best at the club and certainly was his most consistent. With Jetts going down, Birdy probably moved out of the half-forward spot and moved more up around the ball and he played some important roles for us. He’s a really smart player, he knows our structures and he just gets the job done; no fuss.

His pre-season has been
good. He had a good break and came back in good condition. He’s working on getting some miles into his legs. He trains like he plays – with no fuss and he just gets it done.

We hope in 2014
that Birdy can play some more midfield because hopefully some younger players will be coming in to play half forward. He’s pretty important to the side and he can do a job on opposition key players.
