McVeigh put the finishing touches on his rise to the AFL’s elite in 2013, picking up his second best and fairest award and finally earning worthy All-Australian honours for the first time.

The co-captain demonstrated his ability by starting the year in tremendous form in the midfield and up forward, before slotting into defence following Rhyce Shaw’s long-term injury.

Moving past 200 games early in the season, the highlight was his stunning career-high 42 possessions and two goals against Carlton in the semi-final victory.

Draft history: 2002 National AFL Draft 1st round selection (Sydney) No. 5 overall.

2014 Coaches Call

His 2013 season was pretty special. He was named All-Australian for the first time. He played predominantly at half-back but also came into the midfield. As our captain he led the team exceptionally on and off the field.

His pre-season has been flawless, which is what we expect from Macca. He’s one of the club’s best trainers and he hasn’t let us down this pre-season.

We hope in 2014 that he can have another outstanding year. He is so important to us, whether he plays mid, forward or back but also because of his output and leadership towards the group. Knowing Macca, he’ll want to improve on last year, even though it was a pretty special year by anyone’s standards.
