A total of 47 goals from 17 games was enough for Franklin to lead the goalkicking at the Swans last year, but it was his lowest season tally and the first time he hasn’t kicked 50-plus goals since 2006. A lower back/rib problem limited the three-time Coleman Medal winner’s output mid-season, but more significant was his decision to step away from the game the week before the finals to seek treatment for an ongoing mental health issue. Franklin played no part in the Swans’ unsuccessful finals campaign, but thankfully returned to the club for his post-season meeting with Sydney officials and looked in good spirits. There is no doubt he is a superstar and a huge part of the Swans’ line-up, but the club has publicly stated that football is secondary and that Franklin’s health is his No. 1 priority.
