Following nine seasons, 182 games and two flags with Hawthorn, Franklin decided to play out the remaining years of his AFL career as a Swan.

Turning 27 on January 30, Franklin will be under the spotlight as he attempts to keep the Swans among the competition’s best teams.

Armed with a nine-year contract, he has plenty of time to prove his undoubted worth.

Joining a forward line that boasts Kurt Tippett, Adam Goodes, Sam Reid and former Hawks teammate Ben McGlynn, Franklin’s size and speed means he may continue to spend time further up the ground at his new SCG home.

Previous AFL club: Hawthorn (2005-13: 182 games, 580 goals).

Draft history: 2004 NAB AFL Draft 1st round selection (Hawthorn) No. 5 overall; 2013 restricted free agent (Sydney Swans)

2014 Coaches Call

We recruited him because he’s one of the best players in the competition and he’s a seriously talented player. He’s played at the highest standard for a long time at a club who won the flag last year, so he knows what it takes to be successful and he’s a quality player.

His pre-season has been pretty good. He came back and did an early session with the young boys and was in really good shape when he came back. He has fit in really well with the boys and looks set to have a big final training block in February.

We hope in 2014 that he plays every game and can have a big impact. Given he is new to the club we’re still learning about Lance, but given what we’ve already seen on the track, we’re pretty excited about what he’s got to offer. We look forward to him slotting into the side and playing well.
