The centre half-forward made steady progress over the opening half of the 2013 season, capped by 17 touches and 11 marks – including the game-saving grab – in the draw with Fremantle in round nine.

But the following week he suffered a quad injury that ruined the rest of his campaign.

An attempted comeback that lasted only a handful of minutes against Melbourne in round 15 was his last showing for the season, and he fell short in his late bid to recover for the finals.

Fully recovered, he is ready to reclaim his place in the forward line and may be used at times in defence.

Draft history: 2009 NAB AFL Draft 3rd round selection (Sydney) No. 38 overall.

2014 Coaches Call

His 2013 season was injury riddled. Sam’s start to the season was actually below standard for him, which he recognised and he worked really hard through that period to rectify it. While his attacking side was a bit down, his defensive side demonstrated that he was still one of our best defensive forwards and he was in the top-ten in the competition for tackles inside forward 50. After a few tough weeks he finally started to get going and find some of his best form, but then he unfortunately got injured and missed the majority of the season.

His pre-season has been a little bit slow because he’s still recovering from injury. He missed the start but has worked his way back. He’s done a heap of running and he’s really fit now.

We hope in 2014 that he picks up where he left off before he got injured. I think we started to see what he’s going to be like as a long-term player and I think the things he learnt going through a rough patch were really important for him.
