One of the premier ruckmen in the game when fully fit, injuries were again a nuisance for Mumford in 2012, with back and knee issues ruling him out of eight games.

In the 17 games he did play, he formed a lethal combination with Mike Pyke.

Averaging nearly 30 hit-outs a game and also proving a valuable addition to the forward line, Mumford just limped across the line in the Grand Final due to a hamstring complaint and will be hoping for an injury-free run in 2013.

Previous AFL club: Geelong (2008-09: 21 games, 3 goals).

Draft history: 2008 Rookie Draft selection (Geelong) No. 57; 2009 NAB AFL Draft traded by Geelong for No. 28 (Mitch Duncan).

2013 Coaches Call

2012 was a bit of an up and down year with injury and it made it really hard for him to get that consistency, but in the end he got through and was really valuable for us. He and Pykey shared the ruckwork really well together and it turned into a good result for him because he’s now a premiership player.

Pre-season has been good. He’s pretty much been injury free so he’s doing all the 3kms and 1kms and repeat efforts. Really what he needed was a big pre-season because he’s been a bit stiff the last few years with little niggles, so for him to have a big season gets us excited for what he should be able to do for us this year.

We hope in 2013 that he can really lead the club in the ruck division. After a good pre-season, we’d expect him to be up and going by round one and really make sure he gives us first use.
