McGlynn had a terrific second year in Sydney, finishing ninth in the best and fairest and earning a place in the Australian side that took on Ireland in the International Rules Series. Led the club in goalkicking for much of the season, ending the year with 30 goals, second only to Adam Goodes. Increased defensive attention led to McGlynn adopting a tagging role in the latter part of the year and he is keen on a permanent role in the midfield. Coaches' call: 2011 was … a year where he played a few roles in the midfield but was predominantly forward. He had some run-with roles, such as when he played on Joel Selwood against Geelong, and he did them very well. Preseason has been … spent training in the midfield, and it’s good to have another player to go through there. Ben has pace and endurance and is always near the top in the running drills and testing. We hope in 2012 … that he keeps improving on what he’s already done. He has the endurance to play in the midfield and play shut down roles but he is still very valuable to us as a forward.
