McVeigh endured a terrible 2011, with his newborn daughter suffering from illness before tragically passing away. But the way the co-captain conducted himself throughout the ordeal was remarkable. It put on-field matters into perspective, yet McVeigh missed only two games and continued to display his stellar leadership abilities. Finished fifth at the club for disposals and kicked 19 goals before performing superbly in a more defensive role late in the season. Coaches' call: 2011 was … when Jarrad showed what a strong character and leader he is. Under very difficult personal circumstances he was still in the top 10 in our best and fairest, which was a great effort, epitomised by his games against St Kilda in particular. Preseason has been … really good. He’s an excellent leader, he’s tough with the playing group when he needs to be. He’s pushed the standard at training and urged everyone to be at their best. His body is in good shape, and in all the testing he’s always at the front of the group. We hope in 2012 … that we he can continue to be versatile as we need him everywhere. He’ll play midfield and back, but then he might also push forward from the midfield. He showed late last year that he can give us real drive out of defence and he’s the perfect player to go back there.
