Mattner had another consistent season in 2011, playing every game, meaning he has missed just one match since joining the Swans in 2008. A key member of the club’s stingy defensive unit, his ability to spoil and tackle was again on display throughout the season. The veteran also provides valuable run out of defence and finished fourth at the club for rebounds from the defensive 50m. A largely unheralded player outside the club, Mattner is one of the first players picked each week, a trend sure to continue in 2012. Coaches' call:
2011 was… up and down. He was probably our best player in the first six or seven rounds, he then had a bit of a quiet patch, but finished the year really strongly.
His pre-season has been… really strong, he’s been running personal best times in some of his time trials.
In 2012… he’ll be a member of the back six, playing off the half-back-flank creating for us again. Player honours: 3rd best and fairest 2008; Adelaide pre-season premiership side 2003.
