Pyke endured a tough time in 2011, largely due to an ongoing quad muscle injury. The ruckman fought his way into the senior side in round six and then excelled in more of a forward role against the Western Bulldogs the following week before initially injuring his quad. It was re-aggravated as he was due to return. Had a solid end to the year in the reserves and the Canadian should have a chance to add to his 28 career games this season. Coaches' call: 2011 was … blighted by injury and that meant he had little opportunity. He played two senior games before he got injured. Preseason has been … really good, he has not missed a beat. He’s worked a fair bit with forwards coach Henry Playfair to learn the leading patterns and structures in the forward line but is still part of the midfield group as well for his ruck work. He is often last off the track as he strives to improve, and his marking has really got better. He understands the game more and knows when to lead and where to go. We hope in 2012 … that he takes the great opportunity before him. He’s now done so much work over the past few years that he can stake a claim to grab that ruckman/forward spot.
