Following 71 AFL games with West Coast and Richmond, Morton has been brought to Sydney to add firepower to the Swans’ attack. Sydney has a history of getting the best out of players recruited from other clubs and will hope for the same with Morton. The Tigers’ leading goalkicker in 2009 with 41, the Swans plan to use him in a similar role and also through the midfield. Coaches' call:
We drafted him because… he’s a creative forward. We didn’t have many natural forwards on the list and he’s certainly one of those and kicked 40 goals two years ago. He’s shown that at his best he can be a really consistent AFL player.
His pre-season has been… he had a slight hiccup at the start but apart from that he’s probably done about 80 percent of pre-season and has made massive gains in his strength and his fitness which is a real positive for him.
In 2012 we want to see… that he gets his chance and plays well in the NAB Cup and contributes to the forward line. Certainly if he can play his role, his natural talent will get him a game every week if he values what we value in the forward line. Player honours: Richmond leading goalkicker 2009. Brownlow Medal: career votes 1. Previous AFL clubs: West Coast (2005-07: 12 games, 11 goals); Richmond (2008-11: 59 games, 94 goals). Draft history: 2004 NAB AFL Draft 3rd round father-son selection (West Coast) No. 44 overall; 2007 NAB AFL Draft traded by West Coast for No. 35 (Sam Reid); 2011 NAB AFL Draft traded by Richmond for fourth round selection (not utilised).
