Smith has progressed well since his debut in 2008 and that continued last season, resulting in him being named most-improved player and finishing sixth in the best and fairest.

The diminutive defender was handed some big jobs and was rarely beaten, taking the scalps of Steve Johnson, Stephen Milne and Eddie Betts, among others.

Chalked up his 50th AFL game during the season and there are surely plenty more to come.

Coaches' call:

2011 was… he finished sixth in the Bob Skilton Medal. Nick has the job of taking the opposition’s best small forward every week and showed his class winning the club’s most improved player award last season.

His pre-season has been… really good, he’s running really well, his fitness levels are well and he’s injury-free.

In 2012 we want to see… him perform the same roles.
