Taken with a father-son selection at pick No. 21 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, the Swans have high hopes for the Claremont product, who was also a member of the AIS-AFL Academy.

A classy midfielder, Mitchell has a terrific work ethic and is hard at the ball.

He is the son of Barry Mitchell, who played 170 games for the Swans in a 221-game career.

Coaches' call:

2011 was … Tom represented WA at the National Under 18 championships and confirmed his elite talents. He came to us under the father-son rule which was fantastic for the club in a year where the draft was compromised.

Preseason has been … Like all first year players he needs to complete a modified program to build his body up to AFL level. He is very self-driven, he steers his own career and we never have to chase him up. He is a super-competitor and mature for his age.

We hope in 2012 … We’re extremely confident that Tom will have a long and successful career with the club. We expect him to push for senior selection at some stage this year.
