Tom McCartin has impressed not only his teammates but also the senior coach with his presence at training since joining the Club in November.

The youngest player taken during the National Draft when the Swans called out his name with their second round pick (33 overall), the 193cm key position forward has shown plenty of positive signs throughout the pre-season.

Longmire said it was the work rate and footy smarts of the 18-year-old that was most standing out on the training track.

“He was the youngest kid in the draft last year but you wouldn’t know it the way he has attacked his pre-season,” Longmire said.

“He’s been fantastic and had some great players to learn from.

“He has learnt a lot off Rampe, Dane Rampe has played on him a lot, Dane is full of praise for the way he attacks it.”

McCartin showed some of what he could offer the side during last Saturday’s AFLX tournament and will line up for the Swans practice match against GWS on Friday night.

After missing the entire 2016 season for the Geelong Falcons with a back injury it has been a stark contrast to see the new No. 30 take part in almost every session this pre-season.

“He has been fantastic since he has arrived.”

“He goes really hard, he has a great tank, his endurance is really high for a big bloke and he is aggressive,” Longmire said.

“He is still only very young, he has just turned 18 and is still learning the game so I am sure he will get off to a good start but we have to be mindful that he is only 18.”

The Geelong local has decided against finishing his year 12 studies as he embarks upon a football career, a decision made in consultation with his family and the Club.

“If he wanted to finish off his year 12 this year we would have been absolutely supportive of that but he was keen to get into the footy program,” Longmire said.

“We discussed that with his family as well.”
