Josh Kennedy could not pinpoint the exact cause for the Swans’ poor execution against Fremantle, but conceded a remedy was needed ahead of Saturday night’s semi-final.

The Swans rued 18 shots on goal in Saturday’s thrilling 10-point loss at Domain Stadium, including five consecutive behinds to start the match despite Freo kicking four goals against the wind at the other end.

The early misses proved telling with the Swans (6.12 to 6.8) outscoring Fremantle over the next three quarters and finishing the game with 12 more inside 50s.

With a do-or-die final at ANZ Stadium fast approaching, against either Richmond or North Melbourne, Kennedy says the job was simple for the undermanned Swans.

“It was very disappointing,” Kennedy said post-match.

“Goal-kicking is a big part of the game and something you need to get right. It’s something we’ll need to address this week and need to get it right.

“We need to regroup, get over it quickly and turn it around.”

While the breeze was clearly a factor Kennedy stopped short of blaming the “swirly and unpredictable” conditions as the sole cause, highlighting the Dockers’ ability to adapt earlier and better while pressuring the Swans into mistakes.

“They seemed to handle the conditions very well,” Kennedy added.

“I felt we definitely had our chances, we just didn’t make the most of our opportunities.

“Our key indicators were positive and credit must be given to the boys for showing some fight and resilience. But they’re a quality outfit and they kicked straighter than we did.

“In patches when we needed goals we weren’t able to kick them, especially late when we were coming at them.”

Kennedy was the catalyst behind the Swans’ resurgence in the second half, collecting an unbelievable 16 disposals in the third quarter on the way to a game-high 39 possessions.

It was the 11th consecutive performance Kennedy had gathered 30 or more disposals, a stat later confirmed as a new league record.
