The Sydney Swans would like to express their sadness at the passing of former player John Elder, who has died at the age of 85.

Educated in Ballarat, Elder’s talent was spotted while playing with country team Wyncheproof in Victoria’s northwest. He was picked up by Collingwood and played two games for the Magpies in 1955, before making his way to South Melbourne.

In the 1956 season the halfback played 16 games for the Swans, with the team going on to finish ninth on the ladder, before playing a further game for the club in 1957.

Elder finished his career at Norwood in the SANFL, playing a single season at the club in 1960.

The Swans extend condolences to Elder’s family and friends.
