Sydney forward Gary Rohan is expected to be sidelined for the next three weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a broken hand.

The 27-year-old injured his hand during Saturday’s NEAFL curtain raiser against the Gold Coast.

Head of Football Tom Harley said Rohan was expected to return before the end of the home and away season.

“Coming back from some time out of the senior team we were looking forward to Gary playing a full game and being back in the selection discussion,” Harley said.

“He had surgery on his hand on Monday, which all went well, and so prognosis-wise we are saying three weeks.

“It is disappointing for both him and us, but I am sure he will rehab well and get himself back as soon as possible.”

Veteran Kieren Jack remains a chance to take on Essendon on Friday night as he continues to show positive signs in his recovery from a knee injury.

Harley said the midfielder would be given every chance at training this week to prove his fitness.

“Kieren is struggling from a medial ligament strain suffered a couple of weeks ago but he is certainly improving,” Harley said.

“We will give him every opportunity to be available for selection on Friday against the Bombers.

“He is certainly not ruled in at this stage as he has a few hurdles to go over but we will give him every chance.”

Veteran defender Jarrad McVeigh continues to make positive progress in his recovery from a broken collarbone and will join in training this week.

“He (McVeigh) will train this week and we will continue to assess him,” Harley said.

“We are not putting a hard and fast return date on him but we pick the team on the back of training and strength.

“Knowing Jarrad, he would have put his hand up last week so we will keep tracking him as he goes.”
