Premiership player Alex Johnson will play on for a eighth season after being re-drafted by the Sydney Swans.

The luckless defender, who's endured five knee reconstructions during his time with the football club, was one of five players added to the Club's list following the conclusion of the 2017 Rookie Draft.

Johnson joins Sandringham Dragons pair Joel Armatey and Angus Styles and QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduates James Bell and Jake Brown, with the latter two chosen as pre-selected Category B rookies ahead of Monday's draft.

Johnson, 25, has managed 45 games since arriving at the Sydney Swans via the 2010 National Draft in a career plagued by numerous setbacks on his knee.

He played his first competitive game in more than three years in July when the popular clubman lined up for the NEAFL Swans in Canberra.

He was able to reach a consistent level of football and played a huge role in the Swans' NEAFL finals campaign.

Despite being delisted at the end of season 2017, the Swans remained committed to relisting him as reward for his tireless efforts during this off-season and in seasons gone by.

"Everyone knows his story, it's been that hard (for him)," head of recruitment and list strategy Kinnear Beatson said.

"He's trained really hard again since the end of last year, he's fit and going, so we thought we'd reward him with another go.

"We've all got our fingers crossed he'll get through, he deserves some luck and we wish him well."

The five players added on Monday join primary-listed draftees in Matthew Ling, Tom McCartin and Ryley Stoddart in rounding out the Sydney Swans' playing list ahead of season 2018.
