Until 1961, the Swans club song was an adaptation of "Spring time in the Rockies" by American country star Gene Autry.

But there was a sense within the club that we needed something more robust. The Notre Dame Victory March, written in 1905 by Notre Dame alumni the Shea brothers, was identified as a suitable replacement.

After a protracted process involving the University and various musical houses, the club was granted copyright in March 1961 and it became our much loved club song.

In March 2021, the line 'while her loyal sons are marching', was changed to 'while our loyal swans are marching' to reflect the continual evolution of the club which now has the QBE Sydney Swans youth girls program and looks towards the future with an AFLW team.

Cheer, cheer the red and the white,
Honour the name by day and by night,
Lift that noble banner high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky
Whether the odds be great or small*,
Swans will go in and win over all
While our loyal swans are marching
Onwards to victory!

*This line has been adapted over time. It was originally 'What though the odds be great or small'.
