Sydney Swans players will be out selling The Big Issue this week, to support the street magazine’s homeless and disadvantaged vendors.

Harry Cunningham, Sam Murray and Tyrone Leonardis will join players from seven clubs, across three football codes, who are hitting streets around Australia to sell copies of The Big Issue Christmas Edition alongside vendors.

The Swans players will compete against players from the Brisbane Broncos, Brisbane Lions, GWS Giants, Melbourne Storm, Port Adelaide and Queensland Reds to sell the most magazines and win The Big Issue’s inaugural Footy Sales Challenge trophy.

VISIT: The corner of Oxford Street and Bronte Road at Bondi Junction from 5.30-6pm on Wednesday 7 December to purchase a copy of The Big Issue from Swans Harry Cunningham, Sam Murray and Tyrone Leonardis.

Vendors buy copies of The Big Issue for $3.50 and sell them for $7, earning the $3.50 difference from each sale. More than 6500 men and women have sold The Big Issue since it launched in Australia 20 years ago, collectively earning $24 million.

The Big Issue CEO Steven Persson said the campaign aimed to shine a spotlight on hundreds of vendors selling The Big Issue on street corners around the country – rain, hail or shine.

“Many of our vendors are big football fans and this campaign will allow them to celebrate Christmas with players they admire. We hope the participation of football clubs will help vendors sell extra copies of the magazine and receive a much-needed boost in time for the holidays,” he said.

The Big Issue Christmas Edition is on sale from 2-25 December. The bumper edition is eight pages longer than regular editions and features holiday wishes written by Big Issue vendors, a look at Australia’s housing shortage and an interview with Micky Dolenz from The Monkees – among much more.

The Big Issue is a not-for-profit organisation that tackles homelessness and disadvantage by providing opportunities for people in need to earn an income and reconnect with the community.
