Gary Rohan has been ruled out of Sunday's clash against Brisbane at the SCG.

Sydney forward Gary Rohan has been ruled out of Sunday's clash with the Brisbane Lions as he recovers from a horror fall against Carlton last week.

Rohan suffered concussion and a bad case of whiplash when he landed awkwardly after an attempted spoil against the Blues, and was taken to hospital in Melbourne where he was cleared of any serious injury.

The setback is the latest in a number of injuries that has limited the 25-year-old to just 81 games in eight seasons at the Swans, the most notable being a badly broken leg in 2012 that cost him almost two full years of footy.

Coach John Longmire said the talented speedster was struggling with his movement on Monday, but backed Rohan to return quickly.

"He's in pretty good spirits and most importantly there's nothing seriously wrong with him, so he misses a game of footy but that’s pretty small in the bigger scheme of things," he said.

"He's had his fair share of challenges but he's always been able to come back from that and push through it.

"He realizes that he's pretty lucky but I think the way he came back from his broken leg indicates that he's able to get through things and still be a valuable player for us."

Former co-captain Jarrad McVeigh (calf/hamstring) trained with the main group on Tuesday but will need to get through another session on Friday to be considered for selection, with Longmire admitting no decision has been made on whether the veteran returns through the NEAFL.

Ruckman Kurt Tippett hit the track for some stationary ball work but looks doubtful with the hip injury that forced him to be a late withdrawal against Carlton, while Kieren Jack (hip) is at least another week away and will ramp up his training load next week.

In better news, Sam Naismith ran strongly without a brace on his injured left knee, and could be a chance to return in the next fortnight.
