Sydney Swans captain Josh Kennedy remains a wait-and-see proposition for Saturday's clash with Fremantle.

Kennedy was a notable absentee from last weekend's win in Geelong after the skipper was sidelined with a mild hamstring strain, only the fifth match he's missed since arriving in Sydney.

With a full weekend's rest the 29-year-old has showed no signs of the injury this week so far, but Head of Football Tom Harley says the medicos and coaches are still erring on the side of caution until the hamstring is really put to the test.

"He still needs to get through training this week ... his final hurdle is on Thursday," Harley said in this week's HCF Injury Update.

"We're still hopeful he gets up to play but it's still too early in the week to totally rule him in.

"Things are pointing in the right direction for Josh but we won't know more until Thursday."

Meanwhile, Sam Naismith will also be pushing his case for a senior recall on Thursday as the ruckman looks to rid himself of a side strain which forced his omission ahead of the trip south.

If fit, the Sydney Swans' match committee will have some headaches at the selection table on the back of fellow rucks Kurt Tippett and Callum Sinclair's solid performances.

"Sam is in the same boat as Josh Kennedy in terms of what he needs to do this week," Harley added.

"Regards to his spot in the side, he displayed some really good form as our primary ruckman (before the injury).

"But let's get over the injury first and we'll talk about the team after that.

"He's clearly an important player for us going forward."
