Star forward Lance Franklin has been named captain of the 2018 All Australian side as he earned his eighth selection on Wednesday night.

Franklin has become just the third player in history to earn four All-Australian honours in red and white.

The Western Australian was named among 2018’s best 22 at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on Wednesday night, placing himself alongside Swans greats Adam Goodes and Greg Williams.

Franklin has also become just the seventh player in history to collect eight All-Australian honours, matching the eight-time selections of Gary Ablett Sr, Gary Ablett Jr, Paul Roos and Robert Harvey and trailing nine-time recipients Craig Bradley and Stephen Kernahan.

Franklin earned All-Australian selection in Hawthorn colours in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012, before adding to his honours in red and white in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

"It is something I will look back on when my career is over and be very proud of because to get eight All Australian's is a pretty good effort," Franklin said.

"It is something I will look back on at the end of my career for sure."

The four-time Coleman medallist’s 2018 All-Australian selection caps off an outstanding season, with Franklin booting 57 goals across 18 games to again lead the way for the Swans in front of goal.

Franklin kicked his biggest haul of the season in Round 1, bagging eight goals as Sydney overcame the West Coast Eagles in Perth.

The 31-year-old snared six goals to lead Sydney to a thrilling win over Collingwood in Round 20, before piling on another five as the Swans edged the Giants in Round 22.

Franklin also became just the second player in history to kick 300 goals for two clubs when he booted three majors in a Round 9 win over Fremantle, putting him alongside Sydney and St Kilda champion Tony Lockett.

He also kicked his 900th career major as Sydney pipped North Melbourne in Round 17, running in three goals to become just the ninth player in history to reach the 900-goal mark.

Franklin now sits eighth on 917 goals after surpassing Hawthorn legend Leigh Matthews in the recent win over GWS.
