For the third consecutive year, Sydney’s Mardi Gras has had a distinct Sydney Swans flavour with Brett Kirk taking part in the festivities.

Around 300,000 people lined the streets to catch all the glitz and glamour of the annual celebration, with Kirk among the 12,000 who took part in the colourful parade down Oxford Street.

Part of the Beyond Blue procession, it was the champ’s first time actively involved in the parade and (by the sounds of it) not his last.

Beyond Blue’s theme was ‘love doesn’t discriminate’, which is my feeling too,” Kirk said.

“I was just grateful to be there to help support Beyond Blue as well as the LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and/or Intersex) community.”

In total, 175 floats made their way from Hyde Park to Moore Park with the theme of this year's event being ‘momentum’ — building on the acceptance of the LGTBI community and continuing the push for marriage equality.

Kirk’s involvement followed on from last year’s event where Mike Pyke, Nick Smith and Heath Grundy joined other athletes from different codes to champion against homophobia in sport.

Kirk was joined by wife Hayley.
