Competition for spots is creating a healthy environment within the Sydney Swans, according to young midfielder Dan Robinson.

The 21-year-old has impressed with his skill and poise across the half-forward line, averaged 15 disposals over the first three matches to … his place in the side.

Robinson said the battle for spots in the senior team was driving improvement from everyone on the playing list.

“It has been a good way to start the season. It is exciting times with a lot of young guys in the team now so we are looking forward to this week,” Robinson said.

“Obviously we lost a lot of experience last year so to see so many young guys coming up and stepping into those roles is great for the Club.

“Even in our reserves there are a lot of kids playing good football so it is a healthy environment to be a part of and breeds competition which is great.”

It has been a long journey for Robinson. After being selected as a NSW Scholarship holder in the 2013 Rookie Draft, he found a way onto the senior list a season later before making his debut in Round 9, 2015, against Carlton.

Robinson believes being eased into senior football has assisted his development.

“You are made to work for your opportunity and when you get it you want to take it,” he said.

“Blooding young kids gradually over the years helps them get experience and doesn’t mean they are thrown in the limelight like a deer in headlights.

“They have done it really well and you feel comfortable at the level to want to be out there as much as you can.”

It will be the first time the young forward has played at Adelaide Oval when he lines up against the Crows on Saturday night.
