Sydney v Melbourne.

The two cities have been compared with one another since day one, now it's time for their footy clubs to settle their differences when the Swans and Demons do battle at the SCG on Sunday.

Melbourne may sit 10th on the ladder but has this season produced form deserving of a top eight contender.

Coach Paul Roos has them playing tough, in and under footy, so the Swans' midfield will again have their work cut out for them.

The Dees are the second best in the competition for clearances (second for centre clearances and third at stoppages) while only the Swans, Western Bulldogs and Adelaide rank ahead of them for contested possessions.

They total and average the second most hit outs than anyone else in the league (behind West Coast), thanks largely to the ruck work of Max Gawn.

Gawn is arguably the most in-form big man in the competition with his ability to contest, cover the ground and score a highlight of his all-round game.

It makes Kurt Tippett's absence all the more interesting, but the Swans have rucks waiting in the wings in the form of Toby Nankervis and Sam Naismith – both of whom were picked in the 25-man squad – ready to replace him.

As Heath Grundy pointed out in Friday's media conference, Melbourne's forward line is also dangerous with the likes of Jesse Hogan, Jack Watts and Chris Dawes working well together.

Grundy, who plays his 200th game on Sunday, and fellow defenders Dane Rampe and Jeremy Laidler, have a big task in trying to quell the Dees' talls.

Like Sydney, Melbourne named an extended squad for the weekend's game with co-captain Jack Grimes, midfielder Viv Michie and utility James Harmes added.

The Swans have won eight of the past 10 contests including the last time they met back in Round 6, 2015, at the MCG. That ended in a 38-point win to the red and white.
