RYAN O’Keefe was billed as the star attraction at the Sydney Swans’ post-game press conference on Monday but it was teammate Heath Grundy who drew the most interest from the media throng.

That tends to happen when one takes a screamer widely regarded as the leading contender for the mark of the season.

Grundy launched himself over Swans ruckman Darren Jolly in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against Port Adelaide and took one of the best high marks seen at the SCG since Warwick Capper set the ground alight in the 1980s.

But true to his unassuming nature, the 22-year-old was nonplussed by the attention before the Swans’ recovery session at Balmoral beach.

“You can’t plan those sorts of things. I just went for the footy and I ended up taking it,” he said when asked his recollection of the grab.

“I think it was Jolls I sat on and when I jumped, I thought I’d gone a bit early. But he gave me a bit of a ride and I managed to stay up there. It just worked out perfectly in the end.”

The big grab drew plaudits from coach Paul Roos, who said it was one of the best marks he’d seen in 15 years.

Not even Grundy’s errant kick to Rhyce Shaw immediately after the mark could wipe the smile from his coach’s face.

“It didn’t worry me. The guys in the [coaches’] box were going crazy but I was still excited about his mark,” Roos said after the game on Sunday.

Swans reserves coach Brett Allison, something of an expert on screamers after winning the AFL’s mark of the year in 1992 at North Melbourne, had also offered his thoughts on the mark, Grundy said.

“Brett Allison always reminds you about his grab. He came up and spoke to me and said it was alright,” he said.

“Playing reserves, he always got into me that he’d heard I could get off the ground and I haven’t really been able to since I got up here. That’s sort of the first time I’ve taken a decent mark.”
