With the December 21 deadline to list international rookies looming, the Sydney Swans today confirmed the Club will not select US college basketballer Alex Starling.

Starling was signed by the Swans under the international scholarship scheme and remained in America while finishing his four year degree at Bethune-Cookman University

Sydney Swans General Manager – Football, Dean Moore said Starling is still battling the effects of a stress fracture of the leg  and was not able to undertake the training required at AFL level.

“We have been aware of Alex’s injury right throughout the process, but unfortunately it has not healed as we would have hoped over the last 12 months.

“Alex showed great commitment to pursue a career in the AFL, so it is disappointing for both the Club, and Alex himself.

“We know Alex has terrific athletic attributes so we will continue monitor his progress throughout 2013.

Starling, who is 196 centimetres and 93 kilograms, was identified by QBE Sydney Swans Academy coach Paul Roos during a visit to the States in 2011.
