Sydney Swans midfielder Tom Mitchell’s stellar debut season has him in contention to take out the 2013 AFL Rising Star Award, which will be announced at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old, who made his debut for the Swans in round 10 this season, earned his nomination after just his second game, where he notched 31 disposals, 10 tackles and one goal against the Adelaide Crows in round 11.

Since making his debut, Mitchell has averaged 21 possessions, 9.2 contested possessions and 5.3 tackles in his first 12 matches and has kicked 11 goals for the season.

The young midfielder will come up against some tough competition for this year’s Rising Star award, with Gold Coast Suns midfielder Jaeger O’Meara, Adelaide’s Brad Crouch and Port Adelaide’s Ollie Wines also in the running for the Ron Evans Medal.

Mitchell is the Swans’ first Rising Star nominee since Sam Reid received his in Round 12, 2011, while current Swans Dan Hannebery (2010) and Adam Goodes (1999) are previous winners of the prestigious award.

Due to training commitments ahead of the Swans’ qualifying final against Hawthorn on Friday night, Mitchell won’t attend this year’s presentation.
