The disappointment of last weekend’s round one loss to GWS has inspired Luke Parker to improve his on-field leadership.

The young midfielder, who was among the Sydney Swans’ better performers on the night with 23 possessions, was frustrated with his inability to make an impact in the final term when the game was on the line.

Speaking after the club’s first training session of the week, Parker said his leadership and performance in big games were areas he hoped to work on this season.

“Obviously (I want to work on) everything, but my leadership is one thing,” Parker said.

“I want to be able to stand up in big games and not wait for someone else to stand up.

“It was pretty disappointing that myself and no-one stood up and took charge and really wanted to change the game.

“I want to be able to take some control myself … and really just be a leader out there.”

Parker said he and his team mates made fairly brutal assessments of their performances in the team’s weekly match review, which took place on Monday afternoon.

The 21-year-old said the team was extremely disappointed in their efforts in the final term, particularly the drop off in both the contested possession and stoppage count.

“We went through the game and there were probably a few efforts we weren’t happy with,” he said.

“We have pretty high standards on ourselves and we have a trademark that we live by, and we didn’t match that.

“You rate yourself in areas, so when you see yourself or others not doing those things that we normally see time after time, it’s pretty disappointing.

“We’re pretty honest with each other and that’s always the case, so if the boys see something they’ll let each other know what they think.

“That’s the best way of us improving.”

Following Wednesday’s training session, the Swans are now firmly focused on their round two clash against Collingwood next Saturday night at ANZ Stadium.

Parker said the Swans would benefit from the additional week off and have no excuses for not being prepared for next week’s match.

“Having the two weeks off we can freshen up and get our mindset right,” he said

“The boys have moved on today and we’re ready to go in two weeks’ time.

“We don’t want to go 0-2, so the boys have trained well today and we’ve got another two weeks of training and we’ll prepare as well as we can for that game.

“Hopefully we can bounce back.”
