The Sydney Swans’ involvement with football at a grassroots level will be promoted at the SCG this weekend as part of Participation Round.

Participation Round, which is a new initiative for the Swans, recognises the many players, coaches and clubs who are involved in football at a grassroots level across NSW.

To celebrate Participation Round, the club has invited players from a number of local clubs to form a guard of honour for the Swans as they run out onto the ground ahead of their round five clash with Fremantle at the SCG.

The Macquarie University Women’s Team will be one of the clubs who will take part in the guard of honour, and club coordinator Liz Fassone said her team can’t wait to be involved.

“We’re really excited to be part of the day,” she said.

“We started as a small handful of girls back in 2009, most of whom had never played AFL before and this year we have grown to almost 30 girls and are now playing in Division 1 for the first time this year having won the Division 2 Grand Final last year.

“The girls love playing AFL and often get together and come watch the Swans play at the SCG, so it’s great to be able to be a part of it all this weekend.”

The club will also be handing out lucky spot prizes for fans wearing their local football guernsey to the match.

Participation Round is part of the Swans Friendly Club program, which aims to connect and strengthen relationships with local football club across the Swans’ NSW talent zone.
