Over 550 aspiring footballers have shown off their sporting ability this week, trailing for a place in the QBE Sydney Swans Academy.

Under the watchful eye of Academy head coach Michael O’Loughlin, as well as Nick Davis and Josh Francou, talented kids from non-traditional AFL backgrounds were given an opportunity to showcase their talents by undertaking catching, throwing, kicking, jumping and running exercises.

Talented boys who stood out during the three-day trials for 10-to-12-year-olds will be invited to join the QBE Sydney Swans Academy program.

Swans Talent and Operations Manager Chris Smith said he was impressed with the level of talent and the number of boys that travelled from all corners of the Swans’ talent zone who want to pursue a career in the AFL.

“It finally looks like there's starting to be a demand for AFL programs in New South Wales,” Smith said.

“Hopefully we can continue to grow the game and be a legitimate competitor for athletes in a region that has traditionally been a stronghold for other sporting codes.

“Young boys were clearly excited and proud to be part of a well-structured and professional environment.

“We believe that we are only on the cusp of what AFL in NSW can become if given the appropriate support and encouragement.”
