Sam Reid is expected to join team training on Thursday as he continues his preparations for Saturday’s AFL Grand Final against Hawthorn at the MCG.

The forward, who was subbed out at three-quarter time of the Sydney Swans’ 71-point win over North Melbourne with knee soreness, has shown positive signs since Friday night, and looks set to be available for Saturday’s decider.

Speaking to SwansTV for the HCF Injury Update, club physiotherapist Matt Cameron said Reid had made improvements every day since sustaining the injury, and was on track to play.

“He’s pulled up pretty well,” Cameron said.

“He was quite sore on Saturday after the game.

“He leapt in a marking contest and as he took off he felt a twinge in his knee.

“We did notice that he lost a bit of power in his knee as the game wore on and while it wasn’t hugely sore, it was affecting him, and that’s why he was subbed out.

“He was sore the next day, but he certainly looks pretty good today.”

The club has full faith in Reid’s ability to recover quickly, particularly after the 22-year-old sustained a similar injury earlier in the season, which he was able to recover from in a short amount of time.

“The similar episode that he had was against Hawthorn the first time we played them this year,” Cameron said.

“That time he was able to turn it around in six days and played the next week against Essendon, so we’re really hopeful he’ll be able to turn it around and train on Thursday and be right.”

Cameron said he was hopeful Reid would resume running before joining the group on Thursday.

“His movement looked really good today and he had almost full movement,” he said.

“We’d like him to be able to do some running in some capacity, and that would be a good step towards being able to train.

“Really, the way he looks now, it will be a case of putting him out to train and if he’s moving well and comfortable and able to do what he needs to do, he’ll be right.”

Aside from Reid, Cameron said that the club had no other injury concerns leading into Saturday afternoon’s decider.

“(The players) are all pretty good,” he said.

“(Friday night) was a harder game, and it was as hard a game as any of the year, so there are guys with just a bit of general soreness, but they are well on the improve now and we should be right to go.”
