After being struck down by injury last year, Harry Marsh was able to produce a more consistent season in 2014.

The West Australian, who completed his second season at the Swans, was one of the stand-out performers during the pre-season, and made impressive gains on the track and in the gym.

Despite failing to break into the senior side this year, Marsh proved himself a versatile player in the Swans reserves, with the 20-year-old taking on roles both in the midfield and defence.

Speaking to SwansTV, Marsh said he hoped he could take a further step in his game next season.

How did you rate your season in 2014?

I was pretty happy with how I performed. It was a big improvement from last year, because I missed half the season through injury. The big thing for me was staying injury free and I was pretty happy with how I went.

You spent time down in defence and through the midfield for the Swans reserves. What role did you enjoy the most?

I enjoyed them both. I think both roles have their separate challenges. I love playing through the midfield but you also get a bit more freedom to run and move around a bit down in the backline, so I did enjoy both.

Coming into the year, consistency was one thing you had to work on, but what else did you hope to work on and do you think you achieved it this year?

The other thing for me was just fitness. I think I’m still working on it but compared to last year it’s been a massive improvement, so hopefully I can build on it again in the off-season this year.

This year the Swans reserves had the help of Ryan O’Keefe, who took on an on-field coaching role. How much did he help the side?

It was great. It was a massive learning experience having someone like Ryan O’Keefe play with you with his leadership and just the way he goes about his footy. He gave us a real insight into performing at the AFL level, so I really appreciated it all.

While the senior team did not win the Grand Final, what was it like for you as a young player to head down to Melbourne to experience the week?

It was great. Just the entire week leading up to the Grand Final was really special just to soak it all up. Obviously travelling away with the team was pretty good even though we didn’t get the result we wanted. The experience itself was really good.

You’re in contract until the end of next season, so 2015 will be an important year for you. What do you need to do to put yourself in contention to play senior football?

I just need to keep on working on my fitness I think. I also need to get that consistency in my games. I managed to get on top of a couple of injuries this year, so if I can carry that through and play as many games as I can, that should hold me in good stead.

Lastly, what are your plans for the off-season?

I’m heading to Bali with the family for a couple of weeks, but then will just head back to Perth and I’m looking forward to catching up with some family and friends.
