Dan Hannebery says an exciting future at the Sydney Swans ultimately outweighed the lure of returning home.

Hannebery is fresh from signing a new five-year contract extension which will see the prolific ball winner stay at Driver Avenue until at least the end of 2021.

Speculation mounted as Hannebery, originally from Melbourne and a free agent as of season's end 2016, weighed up the possibility of returning to his home state.

But the 24-year-old, who is in stellar form this season, says the Swans' strong environment was hard to walk away from.

"It's hard to explain when you’re not a part of it. It's just a great football club and such a great place to ply your craft," he said.

"I'm really excited about the future and it was good to get (signing the contract) out of the way.

"There can be speculation here and there at different stages so it was nice to get it done quickly and focus on what’s important and that’s playing footy."

Hannebery is averaging 30.3 disposals this season, having gathered 30+ touches on six separate occasions, and sits second behind Fremantle's Nat Fyfe in the coaches' MVP voting.

He has been a driving force behind Sydney’s strong 9-3 record and again was a shining light for the Swans in Friday night’s unfortunate demise at the hands of Richmond after collecting 29 possessions, four clearances and laying five tackles.

Instead of harp on his own performances, Hannebery is focusing on how the team is placed and how the collective can improve.

"It’s only halfway through the year and from our perspective our form has been okay (but)…not as good as it could have been," Hannebery added.

"So from my point of view and the from the midfield group’s point of view there’s still plenty of areas we can improve on."

Hannebery’s re-signing comes just days after veteran defender Heath Grundy agreed to a new three-year deal.
