Women’s football will take centre stage at the SCG on Saturday with a curtain raiser ahead of Sydney Derby IX.

Women’s teams representing the Swans and the Giants will battle it out, with the players vying for a spot in the NSW/ACT representative team that will take on South Australia at Adelaide Oval on June 5.

21-year-old Casey Samuels is set to pull on a Swans jumper for the match.

The basketballer has recently signed on with the Sydney Uni Bombers and says she’s only just started playing AFL.

“I’ve only played a few games starting a couple of weeks ago – I’ve always wanted to play AFL,” Samuels said.

“I play basketball so a lot of it transfers over, but it was obviously new skills to learn.

“Women’s sport is always growing and it would be great to see women playing AFL all the time.”

Samuels, who stands at 183cm tall, is described as a developing ruck with safe and strong hands, who reads the play well.

The women’s exhibition match kicks off at 1.40pm Saturday 9 April at the SCG, ahead of the Swans v Giants in Sydney Derby IX.
