Hannebery looks to midfield spread

Season review: Hannebery 2017 player review with midfielder Dan Hannebery.

Vice-captain Dan Hannebery believes the injection of youth into the midfield this season bodes well for the Sydney Swans’ future.

George Hewett, Tom Papley and Isaac Heeney all impressed as they saw extended minutes through the midfield at various stages of the season.

Running defender Zak Jones also took his game to a new level, putting his speed and aggression to good use through the middle of the ground.

Hannebery said it was important keep finding different options to give that midfield brigade a fresh look going into a new season.

“A number of guys grew through there this season,” Hannebery said.

“All that does is make us a lot better side, as there are a lot more guys that can go through there, so hopefully heading into next year those guys get even more time.

“The more you can spread the load in the midfield and get more numbers through there than the better your side is going to be.”

Hannebery admits he had an inconsistent start to the season but enjoyed the challenge of leading his side out of the early-season rut.

“Being a part of that and learning from those experiences is really going to help me as a leader going forward,” he said.

“A lot of the time it is just keeping it simple and not having to go above and beyond.

“It is about helping your teammates out by showing them the way.”
