The Sydney Swans are mourning the passing of former club chairman Brian Bourke, who died on Good Friday after a short illness. He was 88.

Bourke joined South Melbourne as a Committee Member in 1960 and served as Swans chairman from 1967-72. In addition, he sat on the AFL Tribunal from 1976-82 and served on the AFL Appeals Board in the 2000s. He is credited with recruiting the legendry Norm Smith to coach the Swans in 1969 and is a Sydney Swans Life Member.

Outside of football, Bourke practised law for more than 50 years and was Melbourne’s longest serving barrister. He represented numerous high-profile clients and notably defended Ronald Ryan, the last man hanged in Australia.

Last year Bourke was honoured for his services to law and football by being made a Member of the Order of Australian (AM) in the General Division.

The Sydney Swans offer condolences to Brian Bourke’s family and friends, including his wife Jen, his four daughters and six grandchildren.
