Tom Mitchell believes versatility is the key strength of the Sydney Swans star-studded midfield.

Mitchell is part of the midfield mix at the Swans that includes Dan Hannebery, Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Kieren Jack.

Hannebery, Parker, Kennedy and Mitchell all sit inside the top 15 players in the competition for total possessions, with Kennedy coming second overall for clearances and centre clearances.

The dominance of the Swans midfield has played a key role in propelling the Club to its best start to a home and away season since 1998.

Mitchell said he was enjoying working alongside some of the elite midfielders of the competition on a daily basis.

“I am in a very fortunate position where I am able to work with those guys every day and then play with them on game day,” Mitchell told SEN Radio.

“We all complement each other in different ways with different strengths and it seems to be working really well at the moment.

“I did have a few troubles with injury (early in my career) but I have had a bit of confidence that when I got fit I would be able to fight for a position and I have been able to do that.”

It is not just the experienced midfielders that have led the way, with emerging talent such as Isaac Heeney, Callum Mills and George Hewett all seamlessly slotting in at the elite level.

Each of the trio played through the midfield at junior level before taking on new roles for the Swans at AFL level.

Heeney has continued on from a stellar debut season providing a strong aerial threat in the forward line, while Mills has fit in nicely across half back.

Hewett is averaging 11 disposals a game and has booted seven goals in his first six matches playing across the half forward line.

“George has been great when he has come into the team,” Mitchell said.

“He has adapted to that half-forward role very well, so he has been a good contributor for us throughout the year.

“He is kicking goals and putting good pressure on so he has slotted into the team really nicely.”
